5 Most Common Granite Countertop Don'ts

#1 Pick out Your Dream Slab
Don't pick your granite color off of a small sample piece. Look at the entire slab. Always. Even if it's Absolute Black granite. It's natural stone; no two pieces are exactly the same! There can be color and pattern changes in even the most consistent slabs. There can be inclusions of a different color or veining that is not common to the stone. This all happens because its natural stone and you won't see it until you see the entire slab.

#2 Look Outside the Granite Box

Don't necessarily go with granite. Look into marble, limestone, travertine, etc. There are a lot of different slab options out there these days. Do your homework; find out which material would best suit your needs. Look at pictures of countertops in magazines and on the internet, figure out which look & color you like the best.

#3 Buy What YOU Like

Don't pick out your countertops based on what is popular. Why would you buy Tropic Brown granite just because it's popular and not because it's what YOU love? Why would you go with the mitered edge detail just because that's what most people do when you really love a full bullnose edge detail? Find out what you like and design your home around that. Who cares what is popular? That's all relative anyway. It's your home and you should love what is in it.

#4 Hire Experienced Professionals

Don't hire a fabricator just because they are cheap. Natural stone isn't the easiest material in the world to work with. It takes experience, talent and good tools & machinery. With the poor economy there has been an increase of guys working out of their garages and/or trucks. They may not have a lot of experience and can really mess up your beautiful and expensive stone. I 100% believe that the stone business is a "get what you pay for" type of industry. If a stone shop is paying for experienced employees, worker's comp, good machinery and tools, a nice shop, good office people, etc then your countertops are obviously going to cost more money. They are also going to look a lot better and the company is going to be in business longer to honor that warranty down the road. If your fabricator is fabricating your entire kitchen in your driveway RUN!

#5 Understand How to Care For Your Stone

Don't have your granite countertops installed and then just start cleaning them with whatever cleaner you have under your sink. Natural stone isn't hard to maintain, but you do need to do a little homework before your stone purchase. Marble, Limestone and any other calcium based stone needs to be treated & cleaned differently than granite. If you are lucky enough to have someone else clean your home make sure they know how to maintain your stone as well. A few minutes of homework can save a lot of money, stress and heartache in the future.

When it comes to building or renovating your home, the choice of design elements, products, and materials is vast. Whether you choose granite for your kitchen countertops or marble for your bathrooms, by using natural stone, you are selecting a material that is beautiful in appearance, functional in its applications, and durable in its wear.

Dramatic Visuals: Famous and historic landmarks like the Pyramids at Giza, the Taj Mahal, and the Washington Monument are all examples of the striking beauty of natural stone. Ranging from sleek and sophisticated to rustic and textured, natural stones can help you create a bold design statement. You can highlight a slab of exotic granite as a work surface or create an elegant office lobby using cool and pristine marble.

Building Green: If you are designing with the environment in mind, natural stone is a green and sustainable material for your building project. Natural stone, reports the Marble Institute of America, is 100% recyclable and, because of its long-lasting durability, “the most sustainable building material available”.

Minimal Maintenance: Business owners and homeowners alike choose natural stone not only for its appearance but also its durability. Materials like granite are resistant to stains, scratches, and nicks, and properly-treated materials can weather years of use and wear. An annual sealing and an occasional spot-cleaning, for example, can keep your granite countertops looking like new without constant maintenance and worry.

Kitchen remodeling is one of the most common remodeling projects, and consumers dedicate a great deal of time and money to make their rooms elegant and functional. As consumers opt for luxury and durability over plain and fragile, the new “want” in kitchen remodeling is natural stone countertops. When selecting a countertop, consumers look for strength, stain resistance, burn proof, long lasting, and elegance. These are many reasons why a natural stone countertop would be an attractive feature in a kitchen. According to the National Association Home Builders (nahb.org), granite or natural stone is the No. 1 choice for surfaces and countertops, representing about 31.2 percent of the countertop market.

When selecting a natural stone countertop, consumers can look at the different types, finishes, appearances, thicknesses and textures, which make up the beauty of natural stones. One great thing about natural stone is that no two stones are alike, making every single kitchen one of a kind. There are many forms of natural stone that consumers can choose from: granite, marble, soapstone, slate and many more.

Considered second to diamonds in hardness, granite is the most popular choice. Granite is chosen for durability and its rich composition of quartz crystals, mica, and feldspar trapped within. With granite, consumers don’t have to be afraid of placing a hot pot on the countertop due to its heat resistance, and shouln’t fear of scratching it, since only granite or diamond can scratch the surface. Granite is also resistant to the acidic products found in every kitchen.

Chosen for its smoothness and vein-like textures, marble is added to a section of a whole countertop by those who like to bake. Because marble is a softer stone, it is more porous which makes it susceptible to scratches and stains, requiring sealing. Both granite and marble give off different appearances compared to other natural stone products, which is why they are popular.

Soapstone, known as “original stone countertop,” is becoming just as popular as granite. Soapstone is quarried just like marble and granite with components of magnesite, dolomite, chlorite and talc. Many people are attracted to having soapstone as a countertop because of its soft feel; however, it can easily scratch. Soapstone won’t etch from acids, and stains can be rubbed out easily. Soapstone comes in colors of blue, green and gray, and if mineral oil is applied consistently, it will bring out a charcoal-gray color making it look older and much more elegant.

Slate countertops are liked because of their high resistance to heat, but are highly susceptible to scratches. Composed of seabed, slate stone reflects hues of dark green, blue, and black. Just like soapstone, if mineral oils are applied to it, the colors will be enhanced to a darker glowing hue.

One reason why natural stone is a favorite for a countertop is that the finishes applied add on to the beauty and durability. Some popular natural stone finishes are polished, honed, flamed and tumbled. Polished natural stone countertops have a high gloss surface that gives off a mirror-like reflection. Honed finish is a hard surface with a smooth, matte look to it. This finish is very soft to the touch with a fuzzy reflection. When a flamed finish is applied to the stone, it is exposed to intense heat, creating a texture on the surface. To make a natural stone appear worn and old, a tumbled finish is applied. There are other finishes to choose from, but it’s all about what the consumer prefers and the uses of the countertop.

Natural stone requires the proper maintenance to avoid any discoloration, scratches, or other costly damages. Natural stone requires special sealants about every six months to a year. Always avoid acidic cleaners or solutions to prevent severe damage to the countertop.

Countertops are the most looked at for a kitchen-remodeling project to bring out the beauty and elegance of kitchen. Countertops can take a moderate looking kitchen and turn it to a kitchen out of a magazine or remodeling show. For many consumers, having a countertop that will be long lasting, durable and elegant such as natural stone is worth the cost.

Redoing a kitchen is one of the most common house remodeling projects. A lot of money and time is spent by homeowners to turn this very important room more stylish and practical. As homeowners select luxury and durability over boring and plain, the new hot choice in kitchen renovation is natural stone kitchen countertops.

Homeowners unquestionably choose strength, stain resistance, burn proof, long lasting, and sophistication when shopping for a new counter top. These are just a few of the reasons why a countertop made of natural stone is a striking feature in a kitchen.

Natural stone kitchen countertops are a beautiful choice for any kitchen theme and not only that, but these kinds of counters add more value to your home. Natural stone is tough, long lasting and found in several styles & colors, each bringing luxury appeal and extravagance to your kitchen. Through soapstone is one such way.

Often, soapstone is referred to as the original stone countertop. It is quickly becoming as popular as stones like granite or marble. Soapstone is a smooth soft stone consisting primarily of magnesite, dolomite, chlorite & talc. It is probably called soapstone ’cause it has a soapy texture to it, brittle & very soft to the touch. That soft texture is because of the talc in the stone. Soapstone is very resistant against acids and alkalis. Soapstone counters are extremely durable & can bring a beautiful touch to your new kitchen. You’ll also find soapstone commonly used widely in laboratories, fireplaces, sinks and is easily formed with everyday stone cutting tools.

Soapstone is highly durable and heat resistant. Another selling point of a soapstone counter top is how they will not retain stains as easily as other natural stone materials. The stone is quite soft however and can scratch but these are easily removed after a quick coating of mineral oil. Deeper, ugly cuts can be sanded away easily, as well. Through the regular treatment of a mineral oil or sealer, your soapstone countertop can live a long life and will hold up to the test of time. No other natural stone is as fitting for a busy kitchen as soapstone.

The dark, rich color of soapstone counters & its versatility when used in design sets it apart from other stones. This natural stone can be seen in shades of blue, green and gray, and once a mineral oil applied consistently, it will bring out a charcoal-gray color. This makes your counters to look older & much more elegant. Soapstone countertops can bring a lot of elegance to your kitchen.

Natural stones have become an important part of today’s home décor. Several types of natural stones such as granite, marble, sand stone are widely used as wall cover and flooring material. However, these stones are naturally very beautiful but they are made more attractive with help of different surface finishes.

Some of the mostly used natural stone surface finishing are:

Rough – This finishing keeps natural stones in their natural exterior. Such natural stones are mainly used in exterior decoration. Few people use roughly finished natural stones in roofing too.

Polished – Also known as mirror polished finishing, this is the most popular natural stone finishing. In it, one side is finished by the action of the Abrasives on polishing head which gives a mirror finish on the stone. It gives a mirror like impression to natural stones and makes them elegant.

Honed – Honed is also a smooth finishing for natural stones but this is not polished. It is done by using a less number of abrasives on a polishing head. The use of abrasive leads to smoother but non-reflective surface.

Sand blasting – Sand blasting is the finishing method applied for sand-stone. To do it, a blast of sand is fired with hi-speed on the stone. This finishing gives a coarse look to the stone.

Brushed – this finishing is appropriate for some specific categories of natural stones. Few natural stone patterns integrate natural veins. With brushed finishing, backgrounds of such stones get suppressed while veins of the stone get highlighted. These natural stones are considered a favorite for wall décor in modern interior decoration.

Hand Split or Cleft - This is a traditional treatment for natural stone finishing, in which the stone is split along its line of cleavage to open the same at the natural grain. Such finishing gives an unparalleled character to the surface of natural stones.

Flamed – with this finishing method, natural stone surfaces are flamed or burnt off, using a high temperature apparatus. This apparatus is similar to ‘Blow Torch.’ Flamed finishing of stones offers them a contoured finish which bases on their internal characteristics

Why is it that natural stone is considered the oldest sustainable building material? One of the reasons behind this is that natural stone has already proved it's existence on the earth's surface billions of years ago. Also, with the addition of precious landmarks and earth structures such as the Taj Mahal, Coliseum in Italy, and some Victorian houses, natural stone has proved it stands the test of time.

Natural stone comes in a wide array of styles, colors, and composition. They offer durability yet require low maintenance. They can go with whatever design theme you may have. Natural stone also varies in texture. Even though we expect natural stone to be irregular in shape and coarse in texture, natural stone is smooth and radiant.

The use of natural stone as a building material also reduces emissions of carbon dioxide because the only energy consumed is upon quarrying and processing. In the operation and maintenance of natural stone buildings, any kind of energy can be used. Also the visual appearance of any natural stone building even remains almost unchanged over a decade. That’s the reason why maintenance and cleaning costs remain low.

Natural stones cannot be compared to any other man-made or engineered stone. Manufacturers have tried over and over to make products imitating the effects of natural stone, but with no success.

Many people stay away from shiny flooring because it can easily get scratches. Many consumers want to have a more aged or antiqued looking floor. Natural limestone, which is one of the most popular types of natural stone can be used because natural limestone can be scratched, brushed or blasted.

Natural stone is a sustainable and the best building material choice for everyone. It lasts a lifetime.

Natural stones have been used for more than a century and it is the timeless choice of many experts and could last a lifetime once correctly installed and fabricated. Believe it or not, natural stone is the experts choice in every household projects. It is really suitable in every household application, thus it can provide lifelong service.

Natural stones comes in different types, colors, shape, texture and composition. It varies from where it originates and its composition and characteristics. Granite, limestone, sandstone, and slate are the most common natural stone that was utilized and incorporated inside and outside of the house. They differ in their durability, color, pattern as well as of texture. These natural stones could be used for centuries to create beautiful roofs, floors and walls. Below are some types of natural stone, its classification and purpose.

Sandstone is rock mainly composed of sand sized rocks or grains. Most sandstone is composed of quartz and/or feldspar because these are the most common minerals in the Earth’s crust. Like sand, sandstone may be any color, but the most common colors are tan, brown, yellow, red, gray and white. Since sandstone beds often form highly visible cliffs and other topographic features, certain colors of sandstone have been strongly identified with certain regions. Sandstone are resistant to weathering and this makes sandstone a common building and paving material. The cement of sandstone may be rich in various materials; Silica, Iron, Calcium Carbonate, all of which contribute to the final color and characteristics of the sandstone.

Limestone is a sedimentary rocks composed of mineral calcite. It is an important stone for masonry and architecture vying with only granite and sandstone to be the most commonly used architectural stone. Limestone is used as a facade on some skyscrapers, but only in thin plates for covering rather than solid blocks.

Granite is a common and widely occurring type of intrusive, felsic, igneous rock. It is usually have a medium to coarse grained texture. Granite is nearly always massive (lacking internal structures), hard and tough, and therefore it has gained widespread use as a construction stone. Granite is an igneous rock and is formed from magma. Granitic magma has many potential origins but it must intrude other rocks. Granite has been extensively used as a dimension stone and as flooring tiles in public and commercial buildings and monuments. Granite can be worked to achieve every type of finish from traditional hand tooled, flame textured, shot blasted, acid washed, or honed to highly polished mirror finishes.

Slate is a fine-grained, foliated, homogeneous metamorphic rock derived from an original shale-type sedimentary rock composed of clay or volcanic ash through low grade regional metamorphism. Slate can be made into roofing slates, also called roofing shingles, installed by a slater. Slate has two lines of breakability: cleavage and grain, which make it possible to split the stone into thin sheets. When broken, slate retains a natural appearance while remaining relatively flat and easily stackable. Slate tiles are often used for interior and exterior flooring, stairs, walkways, and wall cladding.

The above mentioned were few of the naturally beautiful occurring natural stones. Natural stone is the so called natural superior surface material. It have proved its superiority among man-made materials and could withstand daily use indoors and extreme weather outdoors without diminishing its natural beauty. It really brings the natural world into your home.

CLEVELAND, OH, March 25, 2010 — The MIA announced today that it is launching the Natural Stone Sustainability Fund in order to raise funds to support the Natural Stone Council's sustainability initiative. The fund will also help the MIA defray the costs of several of its own sustainability initiatives including a green advertising campaign on behalf of the natural stone industry, the creation of natural stone sustainability CEU programs, the development of educational resources, and much more.

"Ultimately, it will help the MIA to further develop a case for natural stone being viewed as an environmentally preferred, sustainable building material," said 2010 MIA President, Brett Rugo, from Rugo Stone, LLC in Lorton, Virginia.

"MIA, with over 1,700 member firms, is raising funds from across the U.S. and around the globe to not only continue to support the work of NSC on sustainability, but also to educate designers and communicate to all a message about the many attributes of natural stone as a sustainable building material," Rugo continued.

Part of NSC's effort, supported by MIA and other stone industry organizations, has been to gather and develop data that makes a credible case for natural stone as a sustainable building material. Much of this work substantiating the stone industry's environmental footprint through scientific means has been done by the University of Tennessee's Center for Clean Products (CCP), a credible and neutral third party.

"With MIA's global reach among quarriers, distributors, contracting installers, fabricators and others, we feel the association can really help in raising funds that will enable this effort to be accelerated," Rugo explained. Expenditures from the fund will be overseen by MIA's executive committee.

"The work has literally just begun," Rugo said. "This critical mission needs the financial contributions from every segment of the industry so that we can continue the research and development and communicate the stone industry's position as being serious about protecting the environment," he explained.

"Our goal is simple. We know that natural stone is beautiful, safe, durable and practical, but we need to reaffirm the stone industry's overarching goal of positioning natural stone as the preferable green building material."

To facilitate the fund-raising effort, MIA has established the MIA Natural Stone Sustainability Honor Roll and will recognize and honor supporters at the following levels: Platinum $10,000 and above; Gold $5000-$10,000; Silver $2000-$5000, and Bronze $500-$2000.

Contributions can be sent to the Marble Institute Natural Stone Sustainability Fund in Cleveland.

Natural stone tiles have become extremely desirable in the past several years due, in no small part, to the rise in popularity of diy programs on the telly. Our passion for property and DIY has led to a predominantly higher number of people engaged in redecorating their homes using the very best quality accessories they can find. Stone tiles have grown to be one of quite a few elitist or exceptional quality furnishings that have survived the challenging climate of the past two years and have retained their popularity.

Renowned heroes will often be heard saying, ‘with great power, comes great responsibility’ and regrettably this is also true of stone tiles and their providers – albeit the particular expression is more like this ‘with great popularity, comes great quantities of immitations’ and it is this key point that we’ll be looking at in this article. Just how do you tell an excellent quality natural stone tile from an immitation one?

Top quality natural stone tiles may be measured by several implicit properties:

1) Solidity

This is fairly easy to explain and when I do, people tend to be a little shocked by just how simple this is and how, if I hadn’t mentioned it, they wouldn’t have actually thought about measuring it. Solid means rock hard, almost impossibly hard to chip, scratch or crack. You can get a good indication of just how solid a stone tile is when you pick it up. If there is absolutely no rigidity or you don’t get any sense whatsoever of frailty, then chances are it’s a solid tile. If you weren’t averse to some exciting experimentation then you could always drop a hammer from a good height onto the tile to see if it breaks. Alas! The timeless hammer drop test. In our showroom, we have plenty of space to actually drop a hammer onto our natural stone tiles. If the stone is truly high quality natural stone tile then the test will cause the hammer to leave no marks on the tile. In your case, do you think the tiles you’re thinking of buying could withstand this kind of challenge? Only superior quality stone will be able to and this will help you make your first decision.

2) Water Absorption

A authentic, quality natural stone tile won’t absorb water in anyway. This is why our jerusalem stones prove to be forever sought after for wet rooms, bathrooms, swimming pools, jacuzzis and even exterior stone walls. All of our premium quality natural stone tiles will propell water absolutely, continuously and if you’re thinking of getting some other ‘stone’ tiles, such as travertine or immitation stone, make sure you ask about the water intake rates, particularly when you’re looking to tile your bathroom.

3) Resistance to Weather Factors

This is a direct follow-on from the previous stone tile property. I’m sure many of you won’t be surprised to hear that a truly natural stone that has not been machine manufacturerd or is synthetic will be much more resistant to the great British weather – rain, sleet, cold and wind.. Any stone you’re considering for an exterior must be able to withstand these elements. Our own exterior jerusalem stone does withstand them and in some cases, like our recovered and reclaimed natural stone, have been withstanding them for hundreds of years.. You can always ask the shop owner or sales assistant if the tiles they supply are suitable for external use and if so, for some examples of where you can go and look at them. One telling sign might even be if they have any natural stone on display outside of their premises.

Clever marketing and sales tactics can heavily influence your buying decision and you should be wary of smart looking displays containing really nice looking tiles at unbelievable knock down prices. Make sure you always do your own research and due diligence on any stone that is advertised as natural stone because there are so many cheaper immitations out there that will ultimately cost you more in the long run!

http://naturalstonetile.wordpress.com/2011/03/13/choosing-the-perfect-natural-stone-tiles/#more-4
